OUR APPROACH

Grease, Oil, Starch and Sugars all accumulate in drain line systems. Although your kitchen may not make it a practice to pour grease directly into the drain, normal plate ware and pot and pan washing will produce enough grease to eventually reduce the diameter of your pipes. The build up that occurs acts like glue, allowing things like straws, plastic bags and hand towels to catch, eventually causing a clog in the line.

Grease and Oil
Shoulders are the first sign of grease build up. As untreated grease continues to accumulate it will begin to occlude the top half of the pipe, eventually the interior diameter of the drain line will become so small that debris that should flow through gets hung up and creates a clog.

Starch and Sugar Buildup
Opposite to grease and oil accumulation in drain lines, starch and sugar build up happens from the bottom of the drain line up. Sugar will find its way into the drain line from soda’s being dumped or from liquor from your bar. Starch and sugars will form what’s called a “sugar snake” which is a slimy build-up that will run the length of the drain line. Sugar snakes are found in your bar drains and from drains from soda machines. We also find these “sugar snakes” in kitchens that are used exclusively for baking. Auguring or snaking these lines out is difficult because the “sugar snakes” consistency is similar to a gelatin. Once the auger is removed from the drain line the sugar snake reforms into its original shape. The accumulation of starch and sugars can be seen in the diagram below.

THE EARTH BIO TECHNOLOGIES SOLUTION
Earth Bio Technologies is the only company in the Philadelphia area to use LIVE VEGETATIVE BACTERIA to remediate grease oil and sugars from drain lines. Other companies use either a “Spore-Form” Bacteria or an “Enzyme”.

Live Vegetative Bacteria
The Bacteria that Earth Bio Technologies uses is over-nighted to us in a freeze dried state with the use of dry ice. It is then incubated for 24 hours, under ideal temperature and pH. After incubation, our Live Vegetative Bacteria gets decanted and prepared to be delivered to our clients the next day.

The strains of live bacteria are injected directly into the drain line. Once it has come into contact with a food source (fats, grease, starch or sugars) it breaks the bond formed in fats and begins digesting the individual molecules. The by-product of this process is carbon dioxide and water.

OTHER METHODS
Spore-Form Bacteria
Spore form bacteria can be purchased at your local hardware store. This type of bacteria is in its “spore state”, which means it has created a shell around itself in order to protect it until a food source has been supplied, temperatures are between 70 and 140 degrees and the pH of the water is neutral. Once all of these conditions have been met, the bacteria will break out of its shell and come to life; this process takes 24 to 36 hours, and by that time, your “treated water” is no longer in your facility. If you look at the MSDS for “Spore-Form” bacteria it is mostly comprised of surfactants or soaps. What it does is form a soap film over the grease molecules detaches molecules from each other and allows it to flow downstream. After the soap has washed off, the molecules become sticky again and let them reconstitute further out.

Enzymes
Enzymes are not allowed by most municipal sewer authorities. Enzymes will break the bond in the fat molecules; however it will allow them to reform somewhere down stream. Sewer Authorities frown on them because it pushes the grease out of your facility, and allows it to reform in the municipal drain line system.
